by Your News Hound on March 31, 2010

It’s the time of the year again, when Guide Dogs charity is asking you to nominate a special guide dog you know for the Guide Dogs of the Year 2010 award.

Our judges will select winners in each category, before naming one dog the overall Guide Dog of the Year 2010. Winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Kennel Club in London in September.

There are three categories:

  • Beyond the Call of Duty – for guide dogs that have performed a heroic act, or helped their owner avoid a dangerous situation.
  • Life Changing – for guide dogs who have given their owners the mobility and confidence to take on a new challenge; e.g. going to work, trying a new hobby…or something completely different.
  • Outstanding Work – for guide dogs whose work is exceptional; e.g. adapting to a new environment or circumstances, or mastering complex skills.

Nominated guide dogs must be qualified and expected still to be working in September. For full terms and conditions of Guide Dog of the Year 2010 please read our terms and conditions.

Guide Dogs needs your vote!

by Your News Hound on March 30, 2010

Have you heard about the Drambuie Pursuit?

In 2009 it was a truly breath-taking action sports event with competitors racing from the Isle of Skye to Inverness and defining the very spirit of adventure. For 2010 the top 5 teams, as voted by you, will be selected for the Pursuit.

This year your vote is needed to help one of our avid supporters, Lawrence Smith, to raise £2500 for GuideDogs!

His Dram2many team would like to participate in the Drambuie Pursuit 2010 and there is an opportunity for the team who generates the highest number of votes to win £2500 for their chosen charity.

Along with 2 of the other members of the team, Laurence has been involved in a number of events for Guide Dogs. From shaving heads with the Moffat Rugby Team, Dragon Boat races to quizzes and collections with The Buccleuch Arms Hotel. In total they have raised over £10 000 in  the last 5 years for Guide Dogs.

The big deal is they need votes, both for them to compete and for Guide Dogs to claim this money which is openly up for grabs!

Follow this link, http://www.drambuie.co.uk/teams/284 to go to the voting page on the Drambuie Pursuit website. From there you will be able to vote and read up on the details of the event which is certainly gaining in profile over the years.

One of the requirements of entry was to have a Facebook page which the team have created here: Team Dram2many.

Uffa: first shower

by Your News Hound on March 29, 2010

Uffa’s First Shower

Uffa in the shower

Uffa in the shower

Uffa was out in the woods again this weekend. When I say woods I think I should say ‘ditches’. Saturday was a cleaner walk with a finishing clean stream. Sunday, well, Uffa found not only a muddy ditch but a stinky muddy ditch which turned his lower half orange right at the end of his walk! A decision was made to just take him home and stick him in the shower rather than rub forever. Uffa loved his shower (undercarriage only) especially getting his legs shampooed and rinsed. He watched the foul coloured water disappear as he became all clean and sweet smelling again. Uffa was then taken out and given a good dry, sadly not before he had a good shake in the middle of the bathroom. How far can a dog shake water? Further than you think! Next problem-see the colour of my jumper-bad choice. I should have known better and taken it off but hey I never learn. Thank goodness for washing machines!

Lawrie and the train

by Your News Hound on March 27, 2010

Wow I am sooooo excited! Today my mum and dad took me on the train for a long journey to somewhere I had never been before it was great fun. Mum was a bit boring though as she wanted to shop for new clothes and me and dad didn't so we sat outside watching the people and pigeons. When we were walking back from the station I was sitting waiting to cross the road and a great big fire engine went whizzing past making a nee naw noise, I had a look at it but I wasn't scared, mum said I was a very good boy and she gave me a treat; hmm wonder if I can find anymore fire engines I was so happy when I got home and mum took this photo, she love me doing my posh paws as she calls it.

Guide Dogs launches guide to services for people with sight loss

by Your News Hound on March 24, 2010

A unique directory of the sources of help available to blind and partially-sighted adults and children across the UK has been published by Guide Dogs, to support the UK Vision Strategy.

The guide gives blind and partially-sighted people, and their families and carers, a way to quickly and easily find out what social, health and rehabilitation services, and support from voluntary groups, is available in their area. Organisations and professionals who support people with sight loss can also use it to signpost their clients to helpful services.

The Guide to Services firmly supports Guide Dogs’ new strategy, centred on the mobility journey – empowering blind and partially-sighted people to get where they want to be.

Bridget Warr, Guide Dogs’ chief executive, explains: “The ‘journey’ through sight loss can be difficult and frustrating. The anxiety and loss of confidence many people experience around the time of diagnosis can prevent them ‘moving on’ to live a full, independent life. Knowing what support is available, and how to access it, can make all the difference. This guide aims to improve awareness of and access to services – and therefore outcomes for individuals.”

Guide Dogs commissioned this Guide to Services as part of our commitment and contribution to the UK Vision Strategy. By improving awareness of and access to services, we aim to help people diagnosed with sight loss make the progress necessary to live a full and independent life.

When you click on one of the links below, a box will appear asking you if you would like to open or save the document. Select open and the section will open in a new window.

by Your News Hound on March 24, 2010

Ex-Yorkshire and England cricket legend Geoff Cope and football commentator John Helm will host a Chinese banquet in aid of Guide Dogs in Leeds on Monday, 17 May.

Taking place at Zen Rendezvous in Guiseley, the star-studded bash will include high profile guests from Yorkshire’s business, sport and entertainment communities. All receiving a tail wagging welcome from guide dogs and puppies in training.

Already confirmed as attending are Brian Lockwood, the former Castleford and Great Britain rugby league captain, Joe Royle of former Everton fame, and Gaynor Barnes from Yorkshire Television.

The event is part of the Get Together for Guide Dogs initiative, designed to encourage community fundraising.

Explains Geoff, himself a guide dog owner: “I’m delighted to be supporting this Get Together event for Guide Dogs, one of the many fun ways to fundraise and support the charity.

“I hope other people will follow my lead and Get Together for some Guide Dogs’ fundraising.  The charity produces information packs and downloadable templates for posters and invitations to help make any event a success.

“The guide dog service receives no government funding and relies on the generosity of the public to fund its services, so what are you waiting for? Get Together for Guide Dogs…. you’d be prawn crackers not to!”

by Your News Hound on March 21, 2010

Do you remember the cute black Labrador guide dog puppy Otis? Guess what – he’s recently visited the children at Cherhill Pre-school. They had raised about £100 for Guide Dogs for the Blind by wearing sunglasses for the day.

You can read all about the visit here…
