Grocery Shopping With Laura

by Paige on September 3, 2010

We’ve taken our puppy, Laura, to grocery shop with us a several times now and I could never imagine she’s be so good about it.  When she was still pretty small we would carry her part of the time and let her walk a little bit.  Now that she’s fully vaccinated, she can walk the entire time if we’re only there a few minutes.  She’s getting used to the sounds and smells now.  She’s perfectly okay with all of it.  You could not ask for a better behaved puppy (apart from the occasional sniffs and distractions).

I’ve never minded all of the curiosity and the questions when people realize that she’s training to be a Guide Dog.  People telling her that she will be a great help to someone one day and that she’s a very good and brave girl for doing such a great thing makes me so proud of her.  It’s good for her to learn to greet people properly and she seems to have that built in to her personality.  She’s curious but gentle and calm and waits to be told she can give kisses and sniffs.

Sometimes, however, I find myself “not noticing” that every person we pass gasps with delight and squeals, “Look at that puppy!”  I feel a little guilty for kind of ignoring them and continuing to grocery shop.  However, I know that there are more important things at hand than strangers – like teaching this dog properly so that she does well when she has someone’s life in her hands one day. Also, since we can only have Laura out for a short period of time if I don’t move along we’d never get the shopping done.

I’m a good chef, but there’s only so much you can do with a bag of apples and some lettuce.  Sorry fellow grocery shoppers, but you’re just going to have to coo and cuddle faster.

by Your News Hound on August 31, 2010

You may have already noticed on the microsite and Facebook - the new puppies (Kasper, Julia and Misty) have arrived, so it’s time to introduce them properly on the blog as well. Someone once said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Which one’s your favourite?

Our First Trip to B&Q

by Paige on August 14, 2010

Laura’s first visit to B&Q last week went very well. She was calm and curious. Ever the well-behaved guide dog puppy, she sat in the cart happily when we weren’t carrying her and greeted the people around her warmly but calmly. Her little eyes were everywhere as she took in all of the sights and sounds – but she was never afraid. Perfect.

I’m always amazed how many people stop us and ask to touch her or talk to her. I’m even more amazed how many people don’t seem to notice. It’s a good thing that everyone seems to be okay with her presence but since I’m the person who will accost you and ask if I could cuddle her, it’s strange that some people don’t seem to notice her beautiful little face. As a first-time puppy walker I guess I expect her to get all of the attention all of the time.

Don’t get me wrong, though – Laura is an exceptionally gorgeous dog (if I do say so myself) and she gets more than her fair share of attention. I just don’t see how people can keep away. Are there really people out there who don’t love puppies enough to gasp with delight every time they see one? Nah. Surely not.

Laura the Wonder Dog (Someday)

by Paige on August 1, 2010

Laura, our first puppy to puppy walk, came to stay with us about three weeks ago and she is so lovely!  She settled in very well from the first day.  She gets along very well with our one year old toy poodle and our eight year old tabby cat.   She is such a sweet girl.

In the first week she learned her name very quickly.  She’s quite bright and pays attention very well when she’s spoken to.  One of the cutest moments so far was when she got the hiccups.  Watching Laura play with our little poodle is also a favorite household pastime.

We took all three animals to the vet last week (the cat for vaccinations, Laura to be weighed and our poodle for the ride) and Laura was a fast attraction.  There were several people with questions about how she’ll be trained and what she will be doing as a working guide dog.  She relished the attention.

She is growing so fast already and with her appetite, that will most certainly continue!  We are looking forward to the journey ahead!
